Way back in 2009, I saw David Wain perform at 92Y Tribeca. He had a routine where he rhapsodized about how hot Hagstrom maps were back in the day. And they were hot! I remember a stylish girlfriend who educated me in matters of taste explaining how Hagstrom maps were the only acceptable maps to use. Wain talked about how Google Maps were so popular now, and it was like, “Bye-bye, Hagstrom!”
Last week I saw the empty storefront pictured above, on 43rd St, and said, “The prophesy as foretold by David Wain is coming to pass.” Though somehow I end up muttering that sentence around a dozen times in an average week.
Remember when maps were maps and not just art prints you bought through Google checkout?
GOOGLE EVEN GETS A CUT OF THE THING THEY OBSOLESCED!
