Gabriel Kahane - LA
A few things:
- This is from my Future Husband’s Daytrotter session (and to think, some people go their ENTIRE LIVES without uttering that sentence).
- I’m going to LA for a long weekend, starting this Thursday, and I am very excited. I think I will only blog about this until then. Okay, maybe not. Maybe I will only audiopost about it. There are lots of songs about California, after all.
- Hopefully what happens in this song will have little to do with what happens to me in LA, because from what I can glean, it isn’t anything good. Water on the bathroom floor never is.
- Ya know, as a writer and reader and listener of music and people talking and WHAT HAVE YOU, I have this sort of deeply held, probably crazy Platonic maybe idea that FLOATING AROUND IN THE ETHER are the perfect words for everything, and you just have to get on the right wavelength and catch them, or wouldn’t that be nice? You know when you’re just like, DAMN, YES, THERE IT IS? It’s not always like that, but sometimes it is, which often can only make the times it isn’t more— tortuured? Point being, I think this song has a few moments of that. AND I’M NOT JUST SAYING THAT BECAUSE GABE IS MY FUTURE HUSBAND. But it’s nice to feel that about someone who is, coincidentally, your future husband, because isn’t that just the worst? When you are dating or friends with or have a crush on or proclaiming your NetLove for someone who produces something or performs something or whatevs and you are sincerely afraid to see it /hear it/ read it, for fear that it completely blows, or worse, my favorite word but least favorite concept: MEDIOCRITY. (it’s pretty, aint it?).
- ANYWAY: “She concentrates discretely on the t.v. up above,” is that moment. I guess it’s the same moment as “A mattress for an island and a plastic sheet for sure,” it’s so perfect there, they are the perfect syllables at the perfect moments (I lack the language to technically say what I mean but cmon, assholes, you get my drift) it’s so good, guys, please someone tell me you know what I’m talking about.
- I got to see Gabe recently, as he had a residency at Rockwood Music Hall in June. It was grand and he has a show Friday at 10, guys, that you should totally go to, if not just so you know who I am going to marry in a few years once I finally get my life together. I, however, will be in LA. THE SELFISH CITY WINS AGAIN, AM I RIGHT?
