“I read it at least once a year, every single year for the next five years, and often carried it around with me in high school even when I wasn’t actively reading it because I wanted people to see me with it and ask me questions about it and have big huge important life discussions with me revolving around but not limited to Holden Caufield and the mysteries of life as we know it and why phonies are phonies in the 50s or the 90s and, okay, mostly I wanted girls to notice it and maybe date me and, while that never worked that I know of, I did end up using the book itself as a litmus test for girlfriends, if they read it and didn’t ‘get it’, they were so out. Like relationship immediately over.”
