I just received word that my best friend and roommate all through college is in the hospital right now having her 2nd baby. She texted all of us while I was on the plane and I just charged my phone and texted her back with a few omgomgomg’s and now she is apologizing, over labor, for not calling me back last week. “Well, you know me, I like to keep up with my correspondences.” Hahahahahaha.

Meanwhile over coffee this afternoon a few of my aunts said something like, ‘And you! What happened with you, I thought you had a boyfriend there for a little bit??” and the kitchen fell silent waiting for me to respond and I just squinted my eyes out the window and wondered, honestly wondered, who the hell she was talking about.

“Well, this year,” I cleared my throat, “there have been a few false starts.”

Everyone laughed, especially the women. Someone patted me on the back. We all felt better.
